Design

The special commemorative coin ‘100 years Mint Building’ has been designed by Juan José Sánchez Castaño, a modeller at the Royal Dutch Mint. The design represents a beautiful contrast between old and new; the architectonic beauty of the historic Mint Building versus the innovative techniques involved in striking coins. You will see unique elements from the Mint Building in the coin’s design.

The portrait side is modelled in 3D and brings Queen Beatrix to life in a truly regal manner; a classic work of art.

By contrast, the reverse side is an example of innovation. Never displayed before on a coin: a QR code.

The design of the coin was a treasure hunt through the building. The designer wants to design its the spirit of the building and launching a dialogue with the symbols and signs of the building to go. Examples are the stone sculptures of the two men on the building.

Student and Teacher.

The QR code, is a symbol of modern life: technology and the Internet have become an integral part of our lives. A world where the “master and disciple” concept of transfer of knowledge is changing, due to the great source and amount of information available on the Internet. A world where the coins were not hammered, but engraved with laser technology. A world of QR codes, augmented reality, Internet, displays, lasers and mobile phones.
